 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

 Today, we begin the new liturgical year – Cycle A – from the Gospel of Matthew. It is also the First Sunday of Advent! As we enter the Advent season, we begin our yearly pilgrimage through the events of our salvation history, starting with the preparation for the Nativity of Jesus, and ending with the reflection on his glorious “second coming” as judge at the end of the world. 

 “Advent” means coming. We are invited to mediate on Jesus’ first coming in history as a baby in Bethlehem, his daily coming into our lives in mystery through the sacraments, through the Bible, and through the worshipping community, and finally, his Second Coming at the end of the world to reward the just and to punish the wicked. We see the traditional signs of Advent in our Church: violet vestments and hangings, dried flowers on the altar, and the Advent wreath. These signs remind us that we must prepare for the rebirth of Jesus in our hearts and lives, enabling him to radiate his love, mercy, compassion, and forgiveness around us. 

 In the First Reading, the prophet Isaiah describes his vision of all nations making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, affirming their faith in the one true God. Today’s responsorial psalm is a joyous hymn originally sung as pilgrims journeyed to the Temple in Jerusalem. They prepare us for our yearly pilgrimage. In the Second Reading Paul exhorts the Roman Christian community to get ready to meet Jesus in his Second Coming by discharging their duties properly, and by freeing themselves from their former pagan tendencies toward excessive drinking, sexual promiscuity, jealousy, and rivalry. We, too, are challenged to make spiritual preparations for Christ’s birth in our lives. In today’s Gospel Jesus warns us of the urgency of vigilant preparation on our part, that we may meet him as the judge both at the end of our lives on earth and on the day of the Last Judgment when he comes in his glory; Jesus reminds us of how the unrepentant and ill-prepared evil people were destroyed by the flood in the time of Noah and how a thief would break in and plunder the precious belongings of an ill-prepared house owner. Using the additional examples later, Jesus repeats his warning for us to be vigilant and well-prepared all the time, doing the will of God by loving others. 

 We need to be alert and watchful while spiritually preparing for Christmas by offering our daily work to God for His glory, by practicing more self-control in resisting our evil habits and inclinations, by seeking reconciliation daily with God and our fellow humans, thereby asking God’s pardon and forgiveness, and extending our unconditional forgiveness to those who have hurt us. Let us begin each day by praying for the strength and power of the Holy Spirit to prepare ourselves for Jesus’ rebirth in our hearts and lives.

 Quý Ông Bà Anh Chị Em thân mến!

Hôm nay bắt đầu năm Phụng Vụ mới Năm A – Thánh Mathêu và cũng là Chúa Nhật thứ nhất Mùa Vọng. Giáo Hội mời gọi con cái trong Mùa Vọng hãy chuẩn bị dọn đường cho Chúa ngự đến với chúng ta trong bình an và hy vọng. Hôm nay chúng ta bắt đầu cuộc hành hương hằng năm qua những sự kiện của lịch sử cứu độ với việc chuẩn bị cho việc cử hành sinh nhật của Chúa Giêsu và cũng là việc suy niệm việc Chúa Giêsu sẽ đến lần thứ hai là vị thẩm phán cho ngày bế mạc của thế giới. Chúng ta bắt đầu mùa vọng. Mùa Vọng có nghĩa là đang đến. Chúng ta đuợc mời gọi để suy niệm về việc Chúa Giêsu đến lần thứ nhất trong lịch sử như là bé thơ sinh ra tại thành Belem, hằng ngày Chúa đến với cuộc sống chúng ta cách mầu nhiệm qua các bí tích, qua Kinh Thánh và qua việc cộng đoàn cử hành phụng vụ và cuối cùng Ngài đến với chúng ta “Lần thứ hai” lúc cuối cùng của ngày bế mạc và sẽ thưởng cho người lành và phạt người dữ. Chúng ta thấy những dấu hiệu truyền thống của Mùa Vọng là mầu tím của áo lễ, cây khô được trang trí trên bàn thờ và vòng cây Mầu Xanh mùa vọng. Những dấu hiệu này nhắc nhở chúng ta là hãy chuẩn bị cho việc giáng sinh của Chúa Giêsu trong trái tim và cuộc sống của chúng ta, giúp chúng ta lan tỏa tình thương lòng thương xót và sự tha thứ chung quanh chúng ta. Trong bài thứ nhất từ Tiên Tri Isaiah diễn tả điềm các dân tộc sẽ hướng về Giêrusalem, cảm nghiệm niềm tin của họ về Thiên Chúa chân thật. Đáp ca là thánh vịnh vui tươi đây cũng là bài rất xa xưa được hát bởi những khách hành hương khi tiến về Thành Giêrusalem. Nó giúp chúng ta sửa soạn cho việc hành hương hằng năm. Qua bài thứ hai, Thánh Phaolô nhắc nhở giáo đoàn Rôma hãy chuẩn bị để đón Chúa khi Ngài đến lần thứ hai là hãy bỏ những con người cũ là việc uống xay xưa, không chơi bời dâm đãng, không tranh chấp ganh tị. Chúng ta cũng được mời gọi để sửa soạn đời sống tâm linh cho sinh nhật của Chúa Kitô trong cuộc sống chúng ta. Bài Phúc Âm hôm nay Chúa Giêsu thức tỉnh chúng ta hãy chuẩn bị để chúng ta gặp Chúa như là vị thẩm phán cuối cuộc đời chúng ta trong ngày bế mạc khi Ngài ngự đến trong vinh quang. Chúa Giêsu nhắc nhở chúng ta việc không chuẩn bị khi mà ông Noel vào tầu và kẻ trộm đến chủ nhà không chuẩn bị. Dùng những thí dụ trên, Chúa Giêsu nhắc nhở chúng ta hãy chuẩn bị và sẵn sàng mọi lúc bằng cách thực thi Thánh ý Chúa và yêu thương người khác.

 Chúa Nhật Mùa Vọng hôm nay mời gọi chúng ta hãy tỉnh thức và sẵn sàng cho việc sửa soạn việc Chúa Giêsu sinh ra bằng cách làm việc hằng ngày theo ý Chúa và cho vinh danh Nước Chúa. Chúng ta hãy biết kiềm chế những tính mê nết xấu và sám hối mỗi ngày với Thiên Chúa và anh chị em, bằng cách xin Chúa thứ tha cách vô điều kiện và cũng tha thứ cho những ai đã xúc phạm tới chúng ta. Mỗi ngày chúng ta hãy cầu xin Chúa ban sức mạnh của Chúa Thánh Thần để chúng ta chuẩn bị cho sinh nhật của Chúa Kitô trong tâm hồn và cuộc sống của chúng ta.

 ¡Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo!

 Hoy comenzamos con el nuevo año litúrgico, el Ciclo A, del Evangelio de Mateo. ¡También es el primer domingo de Adviento! Hoy, comenzamos nuestra peregrinación anual a través de los eventos de nuestra historia de salvación, comenzando con la preparación para la Natividad de Jesús, y terminando con la reflexión sobre su gloriosa "segunda venida" como juez en el fin del mundo. Estamos entrando en la temporada de Adviento: "Adviento" significa venir. Estamos invitados a mediar en la primera venida de Jesús en la historia como un bebé en Belén, su llegada diaria a nuestras vidas en misterio a través de los sacramentos, la Biblia y la comunidad de adoración, y finalmente, su segunda venida al final del mundo para recompensar a los justos y castigar a los impíos. Vemos los signos tradicionales del Adviento en nuestra   Iglesia: vestimentas y adornos violetas, flores secas en el altar y la corona de Adviento. Estas señales nos  recuerdan que debemos prepararnos para el renacimiento de Jesús en nuestros corazones y vidas, permitiéndole irradiar su amor, misericordia, compasión y perdón a nuestro alrededor.

 En la primera lectura, el profeta Isaías describe su visión de todas las naciones haciendo una peregrinación a Jerusalén, afirmando su fe en el único Dios verdadero. El salmo responsorial de hoy es un himno alegre    originalmente cantado cuando los peregrinos viajaban al Templo en Jerusalén. Nos preparan para nuestra  peregrinación anual. En la segunda lectura, Pablo exhorta a la comunidad cristiana romana a prepararse para encontrarse con Jesús en su Segunda Venida al cumplir con sus deberes adecuadamente y al liberarse de sus antiguas tendencias paganas hacia el consumo excesivo de alcohol, la promiscuidad sexual, los celos y la  rivalidad. Nosotros también tenemos el desafío de hacer preparaciones espirituales para el nacimiento de Cristo en nuestras vidas. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos advierte de la urgencia de una preparación vigilante de nuestra parte, para que podamos encontrarnos con él como juez tanto al final de nuestras vidas en la tierra como en el día del Juicio Final cuando venga en su gloria; Jesús nos recuerda cómo las personas malvadas no arrepentidas y mal preparadas fueron destruidas por el diluvio en tiempos de Noé y cómo un ladrón irrumpió y saqueó las preciadas pertenencias de un dueño de casa mal preparado.
