Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

 Our parish has begun the fundraising campaign for the Diocese Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA) 2026. We invite all parishioners to take an envelope home. Our parish assessment this year is $167,000, which is submitted to the Diocese so that Bishop Vann may support and fund the diocesan programs for this year. You may make your contribution by cash, check, or online. We encourage each family to contribute $350, and if you are able, we kindly ask you to give more. Please make checks payable to RCBO and write in the memo line: St Columban PSA 2026. Any amount collected above the $167,000 goal will be returned to our parish. We hope that in this new year, everyone will give more generously so that we may begin the project of installing a new air-conditioning system for our church. May God, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, reward you abundantly and bless every one of you.

Today’s readings define our Christian goal of eternal happiness, and they explain the attitudes and actions necessary to reach it. They form the outline for Christ-like living, giving the personal qualities expected of a disciple of Jesus and pointing out the way of life to be lived by a disciple. They show us the values that Christ cares about. The Beatitudes both fulfill and complete the Ten Commandments which stress the “Thou shalt nots.” But Jesus presents the Beatitudes in a positive sense, as the virtues in life which will ultimately lead to the rewards of salvation - not in this world, but in the next. Zephaniah, in the first reading, calls the “moral minority” of the Jews of his time blessed, because they seek justice, humility, truth and righteousness, thus making a declaration of dependence on God. In the second reading, Paul advises his Corinthian Christians to use their gifts and Heaven-sent blessings for the good of the community because God has chosen to give them life in Jesus, by whom He justified, sanctified and redeemed them. In today’s Gospel, Jesus instructs his disciples in the paradoxical  blessedness of poverty, hunger, sorrow, and persecution. In poverty, we recognize God’s reign; in hunger, His providence; in sorrow, true happiness; and in persecution, true joy. In other words, the blessed in Jesus’ list are poor in spirit, compassionate, meek, merciful, clean of heart, and peacemakers, and are those who are willing even to be insulted and persecuted for their lived Faith in him. Each of the inspired authors of today’s readings, Zephaniah, Paul and Matthew, “makes a motion,” that each of us should consider making a Declaration of Dependence on God and then work with His grace to lead holier and happier lives.

We need to respond to the challenge of the Beatitudes in daily life. The Beatitudes propose to us a way of life, inviting us to identify with the poor, those who mourn, the meek, and those who hunger and thirst after justice. They challenge us to be compassionate people, to be men and women who are pure in heart, and to become the peacemakers in our dealings with one another, in our families and in the society at large, even when this approach to things exposes us to ridicule and persecution. Let us remember that each time we reach out to help the needy, the sick and the oppressed, we share with them a foretaste of the promises of the Beatitudes here and now. But, we need to choose the way wisely. "There are two Ways, one of Life and one of Death, and there is a great difference between the two Ways." These are the opening lines of the "Didache", a first-century Christian catechism used to teach new Christians the essence of the Christian faith. The way of life is the way of Jesus that leads to eternal life. The challenge of the beatitudes is: “Are you going to be happy in the world’s way or in Christ’s way?” God wants us to live as brothers and sisters who care for one another.

Xin quí ông bà anh chị em lấy phong bì về nhà và chúng ta phải đóng cho tòa giám mục là $167,000 dollars để Đức Cha Vann có thể tài trợ cho các chương trình của giáo phận năm nay. Chúng ta có thể đóng góp bằng tiền mặt hay lên Online. Xin quí ông bà anh chị em đóng góp cho mỗi gia đình $350 dollars nếu chúng ta có khả năng xin vui lòng đóng thêm. Chúng ta ghi trên check RCBO memo: ST Columban PS 2026 Nếu chúng ta đóng trên số tiền $167.000 số tiền còn lại sẽ trả về cho giáo xứ Giáo Xú mong rằng năm mới này chúng ta đóng góp quảng đại hơn nữa để chúng ta có thể khởi công ráp máy lạnh mới cho nhà thờ. Nguyện xin Chúa qua lời cầu bầu của Đức Mẹ Lavang trả công bội và chúc lành cho toàn thể quí vị.

Các bài đọc trong Chúa Nhật 4 Quanh Năm hôm nay phát họa cho chúng ta mục đích của các tín hữu có được sự sống đời đời là hãy sống tinh thần của Tám Mối Phúc Thật. Chúa Giêsu cũng đưa ra cho các môn đệ những bí quyết là sống các giới răn của Chúa và hiến chương của tám mối phục thật đây là những bí quyết sẽ dẫn chúng ta đến cuộc sống muôn đời, không phải tại thế gian này nhưng là cuộc sống mai sau. Trong bài thứ nhất của Tiên Tri Xophonia là những người Do Thái đã tìm đến công lý sự khiêm nhường và luôn tùy thuộc vào Thiên Chúa. Qua bài thứ hai, Thánh Phaolô nói là hãy dùng những ân sủng Chúa ban từ trời xuống để cho cộng đoàn tốt đẹp và Thiên Chúa đã ban cho họ qua người Con Yêu Dấu để thánh hoá và cứu độ họ. Bài Phúc Âm hôm nay Chúa đã phát họ hiến chương nước trời là bài Tám Mối Phúc Thật là phúc cho những ai đói khát đau buồn bị bách hại. Trong sự đói khát chúng ta biết được sự hiện hữu của Thiên Chúa, qua việc đau khổ bách hại. Chúa Giêsu cũng đưa ra việc Thiên Chúa sẽ chúc phúc cho những ai có tinh thần nghèo khó, công chính có lòng trong sạch và xây dựng hoà bình. Qua tinh thần của Tám Mối Phúc Thật chúng ta sẽ luôn được Chúa chúc phúc và chúng ta sẽ sống một cuộc sống thánh thiện và hạnh phúc hơn.

Chúng ta hãy đáp lại sự thách đố để sống Tám Mối Phúc Thật hằng ngày. Tám Mối Phúc Thật mời gọi chúng ta hãy sống với những người nghèo khó đau phiền và những ai đang đói khác điều công chúng. Cũng là một thách đố mời gọi chúng ta hãy trở nên hiền lành có tâm hồn trong sạch và trở nên những người xây dựng hoà bình khi đối xử với nhau trong gia đình cũng như ở ngoài xã hội. Chúng ta hãy chọn cuộc sống một cách khôn ngoan. Có hai con đường sự sống và sự chết, sự sống là chọn Chúa Giêsu là con đường dẫn tới sự sống muôn đời. Thách đố của chúng ta là Chúa mời gọi chúng ta hãy sống và chia sẻ cho anh chị em chúng ta.

¡Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo!



 Nuestra parroquia ha comenzado la campaña de recaudación de fondos para el Programa de Servicios Pastorales de la Diócesis (PSA) 2026. Invitamos a todos los feligreses a llevar el sobre a casa. La cantidad que nuestra parroquia debe entregar a la diócesis este año es de $167,000, para que el Obispo Vann pueda apoyar y financiar los programas diocesanos de este año. Podemos hacer nuestra contribución en efectivo, con cheque o en línea. Pedimos a cada familia que contribuya con $350, y si tienen la posibilidad, les rogamos que aporten un poco más. Por favor, hagan los cheques a nombre de RCBO y escriban en la línea de memo: St Columban PSA 2026. Si logramos recaudar más de $167,000, el dinero excedente será devuelto a la parroquia. Esperamos que en este nuevo año podamos contribuir con mayor generosidad para que podamos iniciar el proyecto de instalar un nuevo sistema de aire acondicionado en la iglesia. Que Dios, por intercesión de la Santísima Virgen María, les conceda abundantes recompensas y bendiga a todos ustedes.

Las lecturas de hoy definen nuestra meta cristiana de felicidad eterna y explican las actitudes y acciones necesarias para alcanzarla. Forman el esquema de una vida semejante a la de Cristo, dando las cualidades personales que se esperan de un discípulo de Jesús y señalando el modo de vida que debe ser vivido por un discípulo. Nos muestran los valores que a Cristo le interesa. Las Bienaventuranzas cumplen y completan los Diez Mandamientos que enfatizan los "No deberás". Pero Jesús presenta las Bienaventuranzas en un sentido positivo, como las virtudes en la vida que finalmente conducirán a las recompensas de la salvación - no en este mundo, sino en el siguiente. Sofonías, en la primera lectura, llama a la "minoría moral" de los judíos de su tiempo bendecidos porque buscan la justicia, la humildad, la verdad y la justicia, haciendo así una declaración de dependencia de Dios. En la segunda lectura, Pablo aconseja a sus cristianos corintios que usen sus dones y bendiciones enviadas por el Cielo para el bien de la comunidad, porque Dios ha escogido darles vida en Jesús, por quien los justificó, santificó y redimió.  En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús instruye a sus discípulos en la bendición paradójica de la pobreza, el hambre, el dolor y la persecución. En la pobreza, reconocemos el reino de Dios; En el hambre, Su providencia; En la tristeza, la verdadera felicidad; Y en persecución, la verdadera alegría. En otras palabras, los bienaventurados en la lista de Jesús son pobres en espíritu, compasivos, mansos, misericordiosos, limpios de corazón y pacificadores, y aquellos que están dispuestos incluso a ser insultados y perseguidos por su Fe vivida en él. Cada uno de los inspirados autores la Lecturas de hoy, Sofonías, Pablo y Mateo, "hacen un movimiento", que cada uno de nosotros debería considerar hacer una Declaración de Dependencia de Dios y luego trabajar con Su gracia para llevar vidas más santas y felices.

Necesitamos responder al desafío de las Bienaventuranzas en la vida cotidiana. Las Bienaventuranzas nos proponen un modo de vida, invitándonos a identificarnos con los pobres, los que lloran, los mansos y los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia. Nos desafían a ser personas compasivas, a ser hombres y mujeres son puros de corazón, y a convertirnos en los pacificadores en nuestras relaciones entre nosotros, en nuestras familias y en la sociedad en general, incluso cuando este enfoque de la vida nos expone a ser ridiculizados y perseguidos. Recordemos que cada vez que buscamos ayuda para los necesitados, los enfermos y los oprimidos, compartimos con ellos un anticipo de las promesas de las Bienaventuranzas aquí y ahora. 2) Tenemos que elegir el camino sabiamente. "Hay dos maneras, una de la vida y una de la muerte, y hay una gran diferencia entre las dos maneras." Estas son las líneas iniciales del Didaché, el catecismo cristiano del primer siglo que enseñaba a los nuevos cristianos la esencia de la fe cristiana. El camino de la vida es el camino de Jesús que conduce a la vida eterna. El reto de las bienaventuranzas es: "¿Vas a ser feliz en el camino del mundo o en el camino de Cristo?" Dios quiere que vivamos como hermanos y hermanas que se cuidan unos a otros.
